X-Men Origins: Wolverine Video Game (BYVFX for Blur Studio)
Interview with Brandon Young, BYVFX
Next Limit: What was RealFlow used on exactly?
Brandon Young: RealFlow was used on the water sequence when Logan (Wolverine) emerges from the tank.
NL: Why did you decide to use RealFlow?
BY: We needed to get the most realistic water under a tight deadline. I have been using RF for a while now and knew that it could certainly do the job - and quickly

NL: What was the most challenging part of the project and how did you overcome that challenge?
BY: We ran into some modeling issues, and had to remodel the head last minute for the client. I ended up separating the head from the main sim so we could have the flexibility we wanted. In fact I ended up doing separate sims for the claws, and the body as well.
NL: What kind of time schedule were you on?
BY: I had approximately 2 weeks to do these shots.
NL: How long have you been using RealFlow? How easy/ difficult was it to integrate RealFlow in your workflow?
BY: I have been using RealFlow for about 5 years now. It was extremely easy to integrate it into our pipeline at Blur. I had to write some additional tools for organizational purposes, but other than that it was great.

NL: How do you think RealFlow could be improved or what would you like to see implemented into the program?
BY: A robust versioning system for sims would be really great, and organizational tools that would let the user set up output directories without scripting tools.
NL: Could you please detail what other software programs you used and what hardware you used?
BY: We used 3dsmax, and mental ray for the rest. It was simmed on an 8 core machine.

NL: How big was the team working on the project?
BY: The Wolverine cinematics were a huge undertaking for Blur. About 25 – 30 people worked on it. The sequence which had the water involved about 6 to 8 people.
NL: Do you plan to use RealFlow on any future projects?
BY: Absolutely.
NL: Could you tell us a bit about your company?
BY: BYVFX specializes in fluid simulations and technical direction for commercials and feature films. I am currently based in LA doing fluid and other FX work in films.
