RFRK for mental ray FAQs

3DS Max FAQs

Q: Why can't I see the Motion Blur in the render?
A: Make sure you have motion blur checked in the mental ray parameters.

Q: Why can't I find the material "FlowMesher" or "FlowParticler" in the Material Editor?
A: These are not Materials. They are maps, and are labeled "RealFlow FlowMesher" or "RealFlow FlowParticler".

Q: Why aren't the particles rendering?
A: Make sure you are selecting the mental ray renderer as your render engine inside 3DS Max.

Q: When I'm rendering, mental ray takes too long.
A: Make sure that your license is installed and running.

Q: I have mental ray checked but it is not rendering the particles with FlowParticler.
A: Make sure you have selected an object as instance to represent the particles in the render.

Maya FAQs

Q: When I render with the RFRK in Maya several times, I sometimes get memory leakage problems.
A: Use the following workaround: Launch your renders in “batch render” mode. This will free up the memory as soon as the render is finished.

Q: Maya freezes when I render with the RFRK.
A: Make sure that you have not activated a firewall. This can interfere with the License Manager. Turn off the firewall and restart both the License Manager and Maya.

Q: Maya crashes when rendering a mesh.
A: This could be because an incorrect Scale value is being used. In this case, the RFRK may be using up more memory to create a huge number of polygons. Remember that the Scale value in the RFRK must be the same or very similar to the one used in RealFlow.

Q: Why does my mesh show as spheres?
A: You may need to adjust the scale parameter to the RF scale.

Q: Why is my mesh so blobby?
A: You may need to increase the smooth value.

Q: I have very large bin files and the performance is very slow. How can I increase performance?
A: There are two ways to increase performance: either read the particles without loading them into the viewport, or decrease the LOD value to visualize fewer particles.

Q: Why do my renders take so long?
A: Higher Resolution and Smooth values can considerably increase render times.

Q: Sometimes when I render several times in Maya I get memory leakage problems.
A: This is a known problem for which you can use the following workaround: Launch your renders in "batch render" mode. In this way the memory is freed up when the render is finished.
